Castroville, CA – The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the woman killed in a two-vehicle collision outside Castroville early Monday morning.
Pearl Chavez, 22, of Marina, was the victim killed in the wreck that took place on Highway 1 north of Highway 183 at around 6:16 a.m. on January 12.
According to a California Highway Patrol report, a gray Acura was heading south on Highway 1 when, for unknown reasons, it collided head-on with a northbound red Volkswagen. The Volkswagen was pushed onto the right shoulder while the Acura came to a rest in the southbound lanes.
Chavez, who was driving the Volkswagen, was taken to a hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased. The man driving the Acura was hospitalized with major injuries.
Whether alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the accident has not been determined.
The California Highway Patrol is actively working to find out what caused the head-on collision.
