54-Year-Old Brentwood Man Dies After Motorcycle Crash on Vasco Road in Byron

Byron, CA – A Brentwood man has been identified as the victim in a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred early Monday morning near Byron, authorities said.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office identified the motorcyclist as Curtis Carr, 54, who crashed while riding along Vasco Road just north of Dyer Road, near the Contra Costa–Alameda county line.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Carr was traveling southbound on Vasco Road at approximately 5 a.m. when he lost control of his motorcycle. Investigators said the motorcycle crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a guardrail, ejecting Carr down an embankment.

Carr was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders took more than 20 minutes to locate him due to the terrain below the roadway, officials said.

CHP reported that the motorcycle continued rolling after the initial impact and eventually came to rest in the northbound lane, blocking traffic.

The crash caused significant traffic delays on Vasco Road for nearly three hours.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. No additional vehicles were reported to be involved.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) crash rankings for Contra Costa County for the year 2023, the county reported 4,549 total victims killed or injured in reported traffic collisions, placing it 57th out of 58 California counties in that category — indicating a relatively high crash burden when adjusted for population and vehicle miles traveled. Alcohol-involved crashes accounted for 609 victims, ranking 56th/58, while speed-related collisions totaled 1,085 and also ranked 56th/58. Nighttime collisions from 9 p.m. to 2:59 a.m. were 595 (56/58), and there were 457 hit-and-run incidents (rank 43/58). Pedestrian-involved crashes resulted in 246 victims (50/58), and Contra Costa had 246 bicyclist victims (40/58). Notably, pedestrians under 15 years old were 15 victims, placing the county 58th/58 in that category. These rankings highlight significant challenges with severe crashes, especially those involving speed, alcohol, and vulnerable road users.
