Berkeley, CA – A motorcycle rider was taken to a hospital after a two-vehicle collision on Wednesday evening in the South Berkeley area.
According to the Berkeley Police Department, the accident took place on Sacramento Street and Dwight Way just before 5:15 p.m. March 11.
Preliminary reports indicate that a person on a motorcycle collided with a vehicle near the intersection. The manner in which the vehicles collided was not immediately established.
Police and emergency personnel were called to the scene and upon arrival, they found the rider with a serious leg injury.
The motorcyclist, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The involved driver remained at the scene and spoke with the investigators. It’s yet to be established whether impairment or speed played any role in the collision.
The accident led to road closures on northbound Sacramento Street and westbound Dwight Way as authorities worked at the scene.
The Berkeley police are handling the investigation and no further details were released.
Berkeley’s overall total fatal and injury collision counts have increased notably since 2021, reflecting a rise in serious outcomes even as total reported crashes stayed roughly similar. According to California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) data derived from SWITRS, Berkeley had 442 serious collision victims in 2021, 657 in 2022, and 615 in 2023, indicating year-to-year variation with an overall upward shift compared with pre-pandemic levels. Pedestrians were a large share of those victims — 58 in 2021, 94 in 2022, and 93 in 2023 — while bicyclist serious injuries also ranked high relative to peer cities. Speed-related and hit-and-run serious collisions remained consistent contributors to these totals.
