Augusta, GA – A 72-year-old man was killed in a head-on collision that took place in Augusta on Wednesday morning, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
The deadly incident took place in the 2300 block of Barton Chapel Road near Glenn Hills Drive at about 6:34 a.m. March 4.
Through investigation, deputies determined that a gray Mitsubishi Mirage was heading east on Barton Chapel Road while a black Chevrolet Impala was traveling west. For undetermined reasons, the Mitsubishi drifted into the path of oncoming traffic at a curve and collided head-on with the westbound Impala.
The driver of the Mitsubishi was declared deceased at the scene at 7:38 p.m. The Richmond County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Michael Lopez, 72, of Augusta.
The condition and identity the Impala’s driver were not immediately released.
There were no additional details on the incident. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating to find out what caused the accident.
