33-year-old Sandy So of Jackson, who was driving a silver 2016 Honda Fit westbound, tried to brake and move to the shoulder to avoid the Hyundai. So was unsuccessful and the two vehicles crashed head-on

Amador, CA – A baby died days after being involved in a two-vehicle collision last month in Amador, according to the authorities.
Dense fog was believed to be a factor in the two-vehicle crash that was reported at about 2 a.m. January 24, on State Route 16 near Carbondale Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP reported that 24-year-old Juliana Aranda of Jackson, was driving a black 2018 Hyundai Elantra eastbound on SR 16 when, for undetermined reasons, she swerved across the solid double yellow lines into the westbound side.
At the same time, 33-year-old Sandy So of Jackson, who was driving a silver 2016 Honda Fit westbound, tried to brake and move to the shoulder to avoid the Hyundai. So was unsuccessful and the two vehicles crashed head-on.
The California Highway Patrol officers along with medical services and fire personnel arrived at the scene shortly after and helped extricate both drivers from their vehicles.
Both So and Aranda were transported to hospital with major injuries. A baby in the Honda was taken to Kaiser Permanente in South Sacramento with major injuries.
The baby died of his injuries at the hospital on Thursday, January 29. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the baby as Issac Wilson Shirley, of Jackson. The report shows that he was less than a year old.
The CHP reported that alcohol and drugs were not suspected to have played a role in the accident and no arrests have been made at this time.
The California Highway Patrol is still conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
California continues to experience a high number of vehicle collisions each year. According to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were over 2,000 fatal crashes and nearly 300,000 total collisions reported statewide in 2024. Rear-end and multi-vehicle collisions on major freeways like SR-16 contribute significantly to injuries and hospitalizations.
Drivers are reminded to maintain safe following distances, reduce speeds during low-light conditions, and avoid distractions while driving. Early-morning commuters should stay alert on busy freeways and always wear seatbelts to reduce the risk of serious injuries in multi-vehicle collisions.
