James Willis and Patricio Cabrera Killed in San Mateo Crash on Highway 1 near Pescadero
Redwood City, California (May 31, 2023) – The San Mateo County Coroner has identified two drivers who were killed in a head-on collision near Pescadero on Tuesday evening.
The fatal crash happened on Cabrillo Highway (Highway 1) near Bean Hollow State Beach at around 6:39 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
A Subaru SUV driven by 66-year-old James Allan Willis of Davenport was traveling northbound when it collided head-on with a southbound 2022 Tesla operated by Patricio Cabrera Jr., 29, of San Francisco.
The impact of the collision sent both vehicles off the roadway and into a lagoon.
Cabrera was extricated from the submerged Tesla and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Willis was also killed in the collision.
A helicopter landed at the scene and airlifted a passenger in the Subaru to Stanford Hospital for treatment. The woman has since been identified as Astrid Willis, 62, of Davenport.
More details about the crash were not released.
An investigation into the accident is underway.
