The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Foxworthy and Jarvis avenues. Responding officers found both drivers trapped inside their vehicles.
One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said there were no passengers in either car.
Traffic in the area was closed for several blocks as investigators examined the scene and cleared the wreckage.
The San Jose Police Department is investigating the cause of the collision.
