Berkeley, CA – One person was killed Friday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision on westbound Interstate 80 near University Avenue in Berkeley, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision was reported at approximately 3:26 p.m. on westbound I-80, just west of University Avenue.
CHP logs indicated that a pickup truck struck the back of a big rig after traveling through the area at a high speed and swerving between lanes.
The pickup truck reportedly continued straight into the semi-truck without attempting to stop. Another account in the CHP log described the pickup as first hitting the guardrail before colliding with the semi.
Firefighters responded and worked to extract at least one person from the wreckage. One person was killed in the incident. CHP had not released the identity of the person who died in the crash.
The crash blocked the slow lane and prompted a SigAlert. Westbound I-80 lanes 3 through 5 were closed west of University Avenue while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
