Mesa, AZ – A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed Thursday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash on Loop 202 in Mesa, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The fatal Mesa crash happened just before 3 p.m. on August 13 on the Loop 202 Santan near Power Road.

According to authorities, a large work truck failed to stop for traffic and crashed into four vehicles from behind. The impact pushed one of the vehicles, operated by a pregnant woman, off the freeway and down a steep embankment.

The woman, who was full-term in her pregnancy, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Her unborn child also did not survive. The woman had not been identified.

No other injuries were reported. Authorities did not report any arrests.

The circumstances that caused the work truck to fail to stop for traffic were not immediately provided. The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.

Westbound lanes of the freeway were shut down for several hours while investigators worked at the scene. The freeway has since reopened.

The deadly collision remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
