Tucson, CA – Two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle, leaving one of them dead, amid heavy rainfall on Wednesday night in Tucson, authorities reported.
The deceased was identified as 60-year-old Johnny Rivas.
According to the Tucson Fire Department, the accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on August 5, 2026, on Speedway Boulevard at North Woodland Avenue.
Rivas and a 33-year-old man were crossing Speedway Boulevard when a silver 2016 Subaru Forester traveling eastbound on Speedway in the middle lane hit them.
Authorities said there was heavy monsoon rainfall that had flooded the eastbound curb lane and significantly reduced visibility at the time of the accident.
Tucson firefighters responded and pronounced Rivas dead at the scene.
The other pedestrian was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe both pedestrians were crossing in, or very near, an unmarked crosswalk.
The 44-year-old man driving the car stopped after the crash and cooperated with authorities.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
