Corona, CA – 55-year-old Santos Lopez died after his stalled sedan was rear-ended by a semi-truck Monday night on the 91 Freeway in Corona.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident was reported around 11:15 p.m. on July 27, 2026, near Lincoln Avenue.
The incident started when Lopez’s Honda Accord broke down in the number 3 lane of the freeway. Lopez was unable to restart the car or push it to the shoulder, but had engaged the hazard lights.
Authorities reported that the driver of a big rig was traveling at an unknown speed when he approached the stalled car and did not see it in time, reportedly because the hazard lights were difficult to see due to a possible weakening battery.
The semi-truck slammed into the back of the sedan, pushing it for an unknown distance. The big rig eventually came to a stop in the adjacent slow lane.
Corona Fire Department personnel responded and pronounced Lopez dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
According to CHP officers, alcohol and drugs were not considered to be contributing factors.
An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
