Sunol, CA – At least one person was seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash involving a vehicle fire on Interstate 680 in Sunol early Saturday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred on northbound I-680 just north of State Route 84 at approximately 1:57 a.m.
Preliminary investigation indicates that two vehicles, including a Toyota Prius and an SUV, were involved in the crash, which later expanded to a three-vehicle collision. One of the vehicles caught fire following the impact, with flames visible at the scene and reports of a possible occupant inside during the early moments of the incident.
At least one person sustained major injuries and was transported to Washington Hospital for treatment. No arrests have been reported.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Emergency crews, including fire personnel and Caltrans, responded to the scene. Firefighters worked to extinguish the flames while authorities coordinated a hard closure of lanes to ensure safety.
The crash resulted in the closure of lanes 3 and 4, along with additional traffic disruptions due to debris and emergency response activity in the area.
