Hector, CA – One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash involving several semi-trucks on Interstate 40 in Hector Friday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred at about 6:53 p.m. on April 17, on westbound Interstate 40 near the Desert Oasis Rest Area.
Investigators said at least two to three semi-trucks were involved in the collision. One of the big rigs overturned. Two trucks caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames. Authorities also reported that one individual was possibly trapped and seen in the roadway moments after the crash. The fire spread into nearby brush, producing heavy smoke that reduced visibility and impacted traffic in both directions.
As per the CHP, one was pronounced dead at the scene. The fatality was confirmed at around 8:39 p.m. by a fire captain-paramedic. Information regarding additional injuries has not been fully released, but at least one other individual was involved in the crash. No arrests have been reported.
Emergency crews, including CHP and fire personnel, responded to the scene and worked to extinguish the fire, prevent further spread into surrounding brush, and assist those involved. Additional heavy equipment was requested to help clear the wreckage. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was also notified, and the coroner was requested.
The crash prompted full closure of the westbound Interstate 40 near the Desert Oasis Rest Area. Traffic was also halted on the eastbound side for a period due to smoke and emergency operations. A hard closure was implemented, and motorists experienced significant delays in the area before some lanes were gradually reopened.
The incident remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather more details.
