Hawthorne, CA – 42-year-old April Clements died, and her 17-year-old daughter, Jada, remained hospitalized in critical condition after a driver ran a red light and crashed into several vehicles Sunday morning at a Hawthorne intersection.
According to the Hawthorne Police Department, the collision occurred around 11:09 a.m. on May 17 at Imperial Highway and Inglewood Avenue.
The driver of a pickup truck ran a red light at the intersection while traveling at what a witness described as “speeds of 80 mph or more without breaking or swerving out of the way” and slammed into several vehicles. April and Jada got trapped inside their car.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and extricated the victims.
The mother and her daughter were rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition. April died shortly after arrival at the facility.
Jada underwent several surgeries and remained in critical condition. Friends and family said the teenage girl was put under a medically induced coma.
Two other people were also hospitalized with unspecified injuries.
No other details about the collision were available.
Jada’s family created a GoFundMe page to help them raise funds for her mother’s funeral expenses and her medical bills.

Hawthorne, CA – One person was killed, and three others were injured following a multi-vehicle collision at an intersection in Hawthorne Sunday morning, according to police.
The deadly incident happened at about 11:45 a.m. at Imperial Highway and Inglewood Avenue.
Preliminary investigation findings indicate that four vehicles were involved in the collision. Responding officers arrived to find multiple damaged vehicles and several injured parties at the scene.
Authorities said Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel extricated two people trapped inside one of the vehicles. Four people were transported to area hospitals for treatment. One of the patients later died at the hospital. Two other individuals were listed in extremely critical condition. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
Hawthorne police officers and Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the scene to assist victims, investigate the collision, and clear the roadway.
The crash caused traffic disruptions in the area around Imperial Highway and Inglewood Avenue while emergency crews conducted the on-scene response and investigation.
