One Killed in Monterey County Collision on Highway 1 near Moss Landing

Monterey County, CA – One person was killed in a collision involving a suspected DUI motorist near Moss Landing in Monterey County early Saturday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident was reported at about 12:45 a.m. April 4, on Highway 1, south of Springfield Road.

Investigators reported that a 25-year-old San Jose man was driving a BMW sedan north on Highway 1 when he drifted into the southbound side and collided head-on with an oncoming Ford SUV.

The driver of the Ford, a 32-year-old Castroville man, was declared deceased at the scene. His name was not immediately released pending notification of the next-of-kin.

The BMW driver and one of his passengers fled the area on foot but were located shortly after and detained by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office deputies in the area of Struve Road.

The two suspects were hospitalized with major injuries. A third passenger in the vehicle was treated for moderate injuries.

Authorities later arrested the BMW driver on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, DUI, and hit-and-run.

The accident remained under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
