Fatal crashes remain a serious concern across California roadways. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the state recorded 4,428 traffic fatalities in 2022, with rear-end collisions and crashes involving large trucks accounting for a portion of those deaths. Data compiled through the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) shows that high-speed rural highways often see severe crashes due to speed differences between passenger vehicles and commercial trucks.
