Santa Maria, CA – One person was killed and another injured following a head-on collision on Highway 166 in Santa Maria early Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to CHP Officer Maria Barriga, a Nissan passenger vehicle driven by a Tehachapi resident was traveling eastbound when it crossed over the double yellow lines into oncoming traffic. The vehicle then collided head-on with a westbound commercial big-rig.
The Nissan driver, a Kern County resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of the next of kin. The driver of the big rig sustained injuries and was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. No arrests have been reported.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, including why the Nissan crossed into opposing lanes and whether impairment played a role in the collision.
Emergency responders worked at the scene for several hours, and the crash prompted a full closure of Highway 166 during the morning as crews cleared the wreckage and conducted their investigation.
