According to 2025 SafeTREC and California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) data, the state recorded 583 motorcyclist fatalities in 2023, representing a 10.2% decrease from the 2022 peak. However, riders remain significantly overrepresented in traffic violence, accounting for 14% of all road deaths while making up only 3% of registered vehicles. Serious injuries also remain high, with Los Angeles (754) and San Diego (317) counties recording the highest volumes. Nationally and locally, riders are estimated to be 28 times more likely to die in a crash than passenger car occupants per mile traveled.

The primary crash factors identified in 2026 are unsafe speed (28.2%), improper turning (19.8%), and automobile right-of-way violations (19.3%). Broadside collisions are the most common fatal crash type, often occurring at urban intersections on Saturday afternoons. Demographic data shows that males aged 25–34 are the most vulnerable group, representing 22% of fatalities.
