Newberry Springs, CA. – A motorcyclist was struck and killed Friday evening in a collision on the southbound Interstate 15, about a mile north of the Field Road offramp.
The crash happened around 6:28 p.m. on December 5, when a 2018 green Audi A4 collided with a male motorcyclist.
The rider, who was wearing a black helmet and a white jacket with orange sleeves, came to rest on the right-hand shoulder along with his motorcycle.
San Bernardino County Fire personnel responded and pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene.
California Highway Patrol officers briefly stopped all southbound traffic to secure the area and conduct emergency operations. A tow truck was requested for the Audi, which sustained front-end damage.
Caltrans later announced that all lanes on southbound I-15 at Field Road were blocked due to the crash.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department was notified, and the collision remains under investigation.
San Bernardino County, where Newberry Springs is located, has a notably high traffic fatality rate compared to other counties in the Southern California region. While the absolute number of victims injured or killed in collisions has slightly declined in recent years, the county's population-adjusted fatality rate of 17.22 deaths per 100,000 residents is nearly double that of larger counties like Los Angeles and San Diego. In 2024, preliminary data indicated that 14,615 people were injured or killed in vehicle collisions across the county, a 3% one-year decline from the previous year. Key contributing factors to severe and fatal crashes often include unsafe speeds and distracted driving. Specific trends have emerged for vulnerable road users: Pedestrian per capita fatalities and injuries have decreased in 2023 and 2024, despite a slight overall increase in the total number of pedestrian-involved collisions since 2015. Cyclist injuries and fatalities, however, continue to rise and reached a 10-year high in recent provisional data, even as the number of cyclist-involved collisions remained relatively flat.
