Modesto continues to be identified by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) as one of the state’s most precarious cities for motorists and pedestrians alike. In recent OTS rankings for its population group, Modesto has consistently placed in the top three most dangerous cities for traffic accidents involving injuries and fatalities. The data reveals several critical areas of concern:
DUI & Impairment: Factoring in population, Modesto has previously ranked 2nd worst in California for alcohol-involved accidents.
Aggressive Driving: The city frequently ranks as the 5th most dangerous for speeding-related crashes and hit-and-run incidents.
Volume: Modesto averages approximately 1,450 serious injury accidents annually, a figure that has remained stubbornly high despite statewide downward trends.
While California saw a 10.5% drop in total fatalities through 2025, Modesto’s local rates remain elevated, particularly on high-traffic corridors like McHenry Avenue.
