California remains the state with the highest volume of motorcycle-related fatalities, reflecting its year-round riding season and massive rider population. According to 2025 SafeTREC and OTS data, there were 583 motorcyclist fatalities in 2023, representing roughly 14% of all traffic deaths in the state. While this was a 10.2% decrease from the 2022 peak of 649 deaths, early 2025 and 2026 estimates suggest that motorcycle fatalities have remained stubbornly high even as overall traffic deaths dipped by 2.4%. Broadside collisions are the most common fatal crash type (representing 31.1%), followed by overturning and hitting stationary objects.
Statewide, unsafe speed is the leading primary crash factor, cited in 29% of fatal and serious injury incidents. Alcohol impairment also plays a significant role, with 26% of fatally injured riders having a BAC of 0.08% or higher. Geographically, Los Angeles County leads the state in sheer volume, while rural counties like Tuolumne and Glenn see the highest fatality rates per capita.
