California is seeing a notable decline in bicyclist fatalities following a period of heightened risk. According to the 2025 SafeTREC and OTS reports, bicyclist deaths in the state fell to 145 in 2023, a significant 20.8% decrease from the 183 fatalities recorded in 2022. Preliminary data for 2024 and 2025 suggest this downward trend is continuing, with estimates indicating fatalities may have dropped as low as 105 in 2024. Despite these improvements, California still accounts for approximately 12–16% of all U.S. bicyclist deaths, with nearly 90% of fatal incidents occurring on urban arterials.
The primary factors contributing to these crashes remain unsafe speed (16.5%), failure to yield right-of-way (16.3%), and improper turning (15%). Demographic data shows that male cyclists account for over 80% of fatalities, with the 55–64 age group being the most vulnerable.
