Santa Ana, CA – Three people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision that happened Thursday night in Santa Ana, the California Highway Patrol reported.
On February 26, CHP officers responded to the southbound 5 Freeway at the 4th Street off-ramp after receiving reports of a multi-vehicle accident around 11:39 p.m.
The officers found at least three vehicles involved in the crash. One of the cars was overturned, but the occupants were able to get out before first responders arrived.
Firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene and evaluated the vehicle occupants.
Two people were transported to Orange County Global Medical Center with minor injuries. A third person requested to be reevaluated for pain to their back after the firefighters had left, prompting them to return to the scene. It was not clear if that patient was hospitalized.
CHP is investigating to determine the cause of the collision.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Santa Ana recorded 1,972 fatal and injury victims in 2023, ranking 4th worst out of 15 cities in its population group.
The city struggles particularly with the safety of vulnerable road users and speed. It recently ranked 3rd worst for speed-related collisions and 5th worst for both pedestrian and hit-and-run incidents. Pedestrian safety for children is a high-risk area, with the city ranking 3rd worst for victims under age 15.
