Indio, CA – Authorities are investigating a suspected DUI accident that left an Indio police K-9 officer injured at a city intersection late Sunday night.
The incident transpired just after 10 p.m. February 8, in the area of Avenue 40 and Monroe Street, according to the Indio Police Department.
According to a preliminary investigation, the officer was standing outside a patrol vehicle parked along Avenue 40 when an eastbound Nissan sedan crashed head-on into the patrol car.
The force of the collision pushed the patrol vehicle, which in turn hit the police officer. The officer was pushed to the ground by the impact of the crash.
Some people who heard the accident rushed to help those who were involved until law enforcement and fire crews arrived.
The officer was shortly after transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with significant injuries to one of his legs. The officer was treated and later released. His K-9 partner, identified as Hoki, was unharmed in the incident.
The 28-year-old woman driving the Nissan was arrested by California Highway Patrol officers and was booked into Benoit Detention Center on suspicion of DUI.
Due to the investigations, the intersection was shut down until shortly after midnight.
The crash remains under investigation and anyone with information is urged to reach out to the CHP Indio station through 760-772-5300.
California continues to experience a high number of vehicle collisions each year. According to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were over 2,000 fatal crashes and nearly 300,000 total collisions reported statewide in 2024. Rear-end and multi-vehicle collisions on major freeways contribute significantly to injuries and hospitalizations.
Drivers are reminded to maintain safe following distances, reduce speeds during low-light conditions, and avoid distractions while driving. Early-morning commuters should stay alert on busy freeways and always wear seatbelts to reduce the risk of serious injuries in multi-vehicle collisions.
