Winchester, CA – Authorities are investigating a car collision that caused injuries on Interstate 215 in Winchester on Tuesday morning.

According to Cal Fire officials, the incident was reported to the authorities on the southbound side of the interstate at Scott Road on Tuesday, February 2.

Authorities responded to the scene and determined that two vehicles, a white Subaru and an Infiniti, had collided in the area and the impact caused the Infiniti to roll over. The Infiniti came to a rest upside down in the #1 lane after the collision.

At this time, specific details on what led up to the collision have not been released.

Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene shortly after and helped those who were caught up in the crash.

Medics rendered medical aid to the injured parties as CHP provided traffic control and performed investigations. After evaluation, at least one person was determined to be injured.

The extent of injuries sustained in the accident was not specified. It’s also unclear whether anyone was transported to a hospital.

Traffic on southbound I-215 was slowed down south of Newport Road as firefighters worked to clear the scene of the crash. Tow trucks were requested to remove the damaged vehicles from the area.

No further information on the incident were immediately available. The CHP continues to gather more information as they work to determine the events that led up to the collision.

According to statewide crash type breakdowns from the California Department of Transportation and CHP SWITRS data, head-on collisions accounted for about 9.7 % of all fatal and serious injury crashes between 2018 and 2022 — a disproportionately high share given their relative infrequency compared with other crash types. These collisions often occur when a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic on two-lane roads or freeways without median separation, and they are more likely to result in fatalities than other crash types. Contributing factors include driver impairment (DUI), distracted or fatigued driving, speeding, and unsafe passing or wrong-way travel. Alcohol and drug impairment contribute to a significant proportion of head-on impacts statewide, while rural corridors with limited barriers remain high-risk environments. Due to the direct frontal impact, these collisions frequently lead to severe injuries and deaths even at moderate speeds, underscoring the need for targeted safety measures to reduce lane departure and wrong-way incidents.
