Pedestrian collisions in Oakland have remained a persistent traffic safety concern, with official crash data showing notable year-to-year variation. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) crash rankings, pedestrian victims killed or injured in Oakland were 217 in 2021, 262 in 2022, and 255 in 2023, indicating an initial rise from 2021 to 2022 followed by a slight decrease in 2023, while the city remained ranked 3rd among similar California cities for pedestrian collision counts each year. Local monitoring by the City of Oakland shows that pedestrian fatalities also fluctuate annually, with 15 pedestrian deaths in 2023 and 13 in 2024, reflecting ongoing risk and efforts to reduce severe outcomes. Contributing factors include speeding, failure to yield, and unsafe turning behaviors at intersections, particularly along major corridors like International Boulevard, where nearly one-third of severe pedestrian collisions involve drivers failing to yield at crosswalks. These data illustrate that while pedestrian crash counts have varied slightly, the overall burden of serious pedestrian collisions in Oakland has remained high, prompting targeted safety initiatives.
