Oakland, CA – A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle Sunday night on Interstate 8880 in Oakland, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The incident occurred around 10:38 p.m. on the southbound lanes of I-880 just north of 23rd Avenue.

A witness told authorities that a pedestrian was crossing the freeway lanes from north to south when they were hit by a white Toyota Prius. The pedestrian was left lying down in the Nos. 2 and 3 lanes.

The pedestrian died in the crash, prompting an Alameda County coroner representative to respond to the scene.

The car was towed away from the scene.

An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
