Oceanside, CA – Two people were killed Saturday afternoon after a disabled sedan was struck in a two-vehicle collision on northbound Interstate 5 in Oceanside, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred on I-5 Northbound at the Aliso Creek northbound San Diego County rest area at approximately 2:48 PM on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
According to CHP investigators, a sedan became inoperative on the northbound side of the freeway near the rest area. While the vehicle was stopped, it was struck by an approaching tow truck. A passerby called 911, prompting a response from law enforcement and fire personnel.
The driver of the sedan was identified as Elliot Freier, 61, of Los Angeles, California, while the passenger was Cora Perez, 64. Both victims suffered multiple blunt force injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene by responding paramedics. CHP confirmed that next of kin were notified. No arrests were reported in connection with the crash.
The cause of the collision has not yet been determined, and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the impact.
CHP officers and fire crews responded to the scene following the emergency call, secured the area, and conducted life-saving efforts before the victims were pronounced dead. The incident was documented and turned over for further investigation by the CHP.
