Santa Rosa, CA – One person was killed in an incident where a SMART Train hit a bicyclist in Santa Rosa on Monday morning, the Santa Rosa Police Department reported.
A call was made to the authorities at around 10:27 a.m. January 12, about a crash involving a train on Piner Road.
Police said a man was riding a bike westbound on Piner Road on the south side of the tracks when he was hit by the southbound train.
The Santa Rosa Police Department, firefighters, and medical personnel responded to the scene of the accident. The bicyclist was declared deceased at the site of the accident.
Officials from SMART also responded to assist the occupants of the train. The five passengers aboard the train as well as two crew members were uninjured in the accident.
The name of the deceased bicyclist is pending identification by the authorities and notification of the next-of-kin, the Santa Rosa police reported.
The tracks were shut down for three hours as authorities gathered more information on the incident. The Santa Rosa Police Department is investigating the deadly train collision.
