Santa Ana, CA – The Santa Ana Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run collision that left a pedestrian dead in the city on Friday morning.

At around 5:35 a.m. December 19, police were notified of an auto-pedestrian crash in the 3000 block of S. Main Street between Alton Avenue and E. Dyer Road.

The SAPD and the Orange County Fire Authority responded to the scene and found the pedestrian unresponsive. The victim was declared deceased at the scene.

According to a preliminary investigation, the pedestrian was walking east on Main Street when she was hit by a northbound vehicle. While the victim was on the ground, she was struck by another northbound vehicle.

The first driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators but the second motorist fled after striking the pedestrian and is yet to be located.

Authorities later identified the deceased pedestrian as 31-year-old Cecilia Janeth Sierra of Costa Mesa.

Santa Ana police are still investigating to determine the cause of the collision.

Orange County is one of the most populated counties in California and experiences thousands of traffic accidents annually. In 2022, approximately 17,734 people were either injured or killed in vehicle collisions in the county, according to OTS records. The county faces a significant challenge with DUI drivers, holding one of the highest injury and fatality rates involving impaired drivers. In 2022, alcohol or drugs played a role in nearly 11% of the accidents recorded in the county. Another key factor contributing to collisions is speeding. Statistics show that speed played a part in 22% of the accidents reported in 2022. In Santa Ana, S I-5/405 corridors, Main Street, Bristol Street, and Tustin Avenue have consistently been identified as high-risk corridors due to the large number of pedestrian-involved crashes reported annually. This is often driven by dense traffic volumes in these areas. Improving driver awareness, attentiveness, and compliance with traffic laws could significantly enhance safety on Santa Ana’s busiest roadways.
