The driver was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 198 and collided head-on with another vehicle and caught fire
Hanford, Calif. – A driver was killed and several others injured early Sunday morning following a head-on car accident on Highway 198 in Hanford, according to a California Highway Patrol report.
The crash happened at about 1:50 a.m. on Highway 198 east of Avenue 12.
CHP officials say a 2002 Ford F-250 was heading eastbound on 198 in the No. 1 lane, and behind it was a 2015 Kia Soul also eastbound in the No. 2 lane.
At the same time, a 2016 Toyota Corolla, operated by a 24-year-old man, was westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 198 approaching the Ford.
The Ford was unable to avoid the Toyota and the two vehicles collided head-on.
Reportedly, the Toyota caught fire immediately and the Ford overturned, landing in the path of the Kia Saul. The Kia was unable to stop and crashed into the Ford.
The 24-year-old sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford was flown to a local hospital with major injuries.
Two passengers in the Ford were also hospitalized with minor and moderate injuries.
Two occupants of the KIA sustained minor injuries. They were also taken to a local hospital.
No additional details were provided.
The crash remains under investigation.
