Richmond, CA. – An innocent driver died in a fiery wrong-way collision that also left the wrong-way driver in critical condition early Tuesday morning on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident occurred around 1:40 a.m. on the bridge located along the 580 Freeway, connecting Richmond and San Rafael.
CHP officers reported that the driver of a Range Rover was traveling westbound against the eastbound traffic when they crashed head-on with a Honda Civic.
The Range Rover caught fire and went up in flames after the crash.
Richmond firefighters responded and pronounced the Honda driver dead at the scene.
The driver of the Range Rover was hospitalized with severe injuries and listed in critical condition.
Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor.
Investigators shut down the eastbound direction of the bridge for about three hours following the crash. The lanes were reopened around 5:30 a.m.
