Richmond, CA – One person was injured in a multi-vehicle collision that happened Sunday afternoon on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The pileup occurred around 2:06 p.m., March 8, on the westbound lanes near the midspan of the bridge on Interstate 580.
A white Volkswagen Jetta and an Acura were involved in the crash, blocking the No. 1 lane.
Richmond and San Rafael firefighters responded to the scene.
A female party complained of pain to the leg. The patient was offered medical aid at the scene, but it was unclear if they were hospitalized.
Authorities are investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
Richmond continues to address a high rate of traffic collisions that police officials describe as a critical issue. Recent data indicate that Richmond has a higher collision rate per capita than many similarly sized cities. In 2024, the city reported over 270 collisions across its three police districts, with the central district being the most affected. A significant portion of these incidents involved vulnerable road users, with nearly 20% involving pedestrians and approximately 8% involving bicycles. The primary factors cited by the Richmond Police Department include traffic signal violations, improper turning, and excessive speed.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Richmond previously ranked 37th out of 61 similar cities for total victims. While the city ranks relatively well in pedestrian safety for youths, it faces significant challenges with hit-and-run incidents (ranking 11th worst) and alcohol-involved crashes among young adults aged 21–34.
