3 People Killed in Fiery Mesa Wrong-Way Crash on Loop 202 at McDowell Road

Mesa, AZ. – Three people were killed after a fiery wrong-way collision involving two vehicles on 202 early Saturday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The crash on Loop 202 occurred just after 2:30 a.m. on December 28 happened on the eastbound HOV lane near McDowell Road, authorities reported.

According to DPS troopers, a wrong-way crash occurred when one of the vehicles was traveling in the incorrect direction on the freeway. The collision involved a 2019 Kia Sorento SUV and a 2003 Toyota Matrix Station Wagon, and both vehicles became engulfed in flames upon impact.

Once firefighting crews extinguished the blazes, first responders discovered that two people were pronounced dead in the Kia Sorento, while one person was pronounced dead in the Toyota Matrix. At this time, the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner is working to identify the three victims. No arrests have been reported in connection with the crash.

The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation, though preliminary information indicates the wrong-way travel contributed to the violent impact and resulting fire.

DPS troopers and fire crews responded to the scene to extinguish the flames and secure the area. Additional personnel assessed the scene and assisted in the recovery of the victims’ remains.

The crash briefly impacted travel in the HOV lane of Loop 202 while emergency crews worked, though officials did not report any prolonged freeway closures or reroutes.
