A preliminary investigation by the Oregon State Police indicates that a southbound Chrysler Pacifica, driven by William Sargent, crossed into the northbound lanes, for unknown reasons, and sideswiped a northbound Land Rover Range Rover driven by 18-year-old John Bowman Browning III, of Redmond and a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 25-year-old Joseph Anthony Russo, of Terrebonne

Deschutes County, OR – One person was killed following a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 97 in Deschutes County on Tuesday evening, according to the Oregon State Police.
The victim was identified as William Longhway Sargent, 79, of Bend.
The crash occurred on Highway 97 at approximately 5:34 p.m. on December 16, 2025, when Oregon State Police responded to a serious four-vehicle collision involving passenger vehicles and a commercial truck.
A preliminary investigation by the Oregon State Police indicates that a southbound Chrysler Pacifica, driven by William Sargent, crossed into the northbound lanes, for unknown reasons, and sideswiped a northbound Land Rover Range Rover driven by 18-year-old John Bowman Browning III, of Redmond and a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 25-year-old Joseph Anthony Russo, of Terrebonne. The Chrysler then collided head-on with a northbound Freightliner commercial motor vehicle and trailer, operated by 61-year-old Johnny Edward Jantzen Jr. of Red Bluff, CA.
William Sargent was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three drivers were not injured.
The cause of the vehicle’s crossing into the northbound lanes remains under investigation by the Oregon State Police, who are working to determine contributing factors in the multi-vehicle collision. First responders, including Oregon State Police, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, and Oregon Department of Transportation personnel, secured the scene, assisted the uninjured drivers, and conducted a thorough on-scene investigation.
