SUV Hits 2 Pedestrians on El Evado Rd in Victorville, 1 Dies

Victorville, CA – A pedestrian was killed, and another was injured after they were struck by an SUV Saturday afternoon near the Mountain View Acres area of Victorville.

According to the Victorville Police Department, the incident took place around 7:17 p.m. on El Evado Road north of Dos Palmas Road.

A gold-colored 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee struck two pedestrians in the area under unclear circumstances.

Emergency personnel from the San Bernardino Fire Department responded to the scene and requested two ambulances.  One ambulance was, however, canceled after one of the victims was pronounced dead. The other pedestrian was transported to the hospital in unknown condition.

A walker with a small basket attachment was found in the roadway near the scene.

The SUV was stopped in the southbound lane along the shoulder with visible damage to the front passenger side, including a dented fender and possible impact to the bumper.

El Evado Road remained closed in both directions between Dos Palmas Road and Cholame Road during the investigation.

The California Highway Patrol Victorville Station is investigating the accident.

Pedestrian collision counts in Victorville have declined in recent California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) rankings after a peak in the early 2020s. In 2021, there were 42 pedestrians killed or injured in fatal and injury collisions in Victorville, a mid-range count among similar sized cities. By 2022, that number held at 42 victims, indicating little change year-over-year during that period. However, in 2023, pedestrian victims declined to 23, nearly halving the count from prior years and moving Victorville lower in statewide rankings for pedestrian involvement. Sub-categories such as pedestrians under age 15 and older adults also declined in absolute counts, contributing to the overall drop. This shift suggests a reduction in reported serious pedestrian collisions between 2022 and 2023 in Victorville, though pedestrians continue to be part of the local traffic safety profile and remain a focus for targeted interventions.
