Valley Center, CA – The man who was killed in a suspected drunk driving collision earlier this month in Valley Center has been identified by family as Christian Gonzalez, 35.
According to the authorities, the accident happened shortly after 2 a.m. December 14, near Ridge Ranch and Valley Center roads.
Gonzalez was reportedly driving a Toyota Highlander on Valley Center Road when the vehicle overheated and he pulled over to the side of the roadway. A motorcyclist also stopped shortly after to help Gonzalez.
As Gonzalez stood and opened the hood of his vehicle, another driver failed to stop and crashed into the motorcycle and the Toyota.
Authorities said Gonzalez was pinned by the vehicle and died at the scene of the crash.
The driver who crashed into Gonzalez attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by the motorcyclist who had pulled over. Authorities arrived shortly after and the suspect was taken into custody.
The suspect, identified as Daniel Sanchez Ramos, 26, was arrested on multiple charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI.
The family of Gonzalez has launched a GoFundMe page to help with the funeral arrangements.
California continues to experience a high number of vehicle collisions each year. According to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were over 2,000 fatal crashes and nearly 300,000 total collisions reported statewide in 2024. Rear-end and multi-vehicle collisions on major freeways contribute significantly to injuries and hospitalizations. Drivers are reminded to maintain safe following distances, reduce speeds during low-light conditions, and avoid distractions while driving. Early-morning commuters should stay alert on busy freeways and always wear seatbelts to reduce the risk of serious injuries in multi-vehicle collisions.
