According to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office, the accident was reported around 9:30 a.m. on September 6, 2026, on the eastbound side of the freeway near University Avenue.

Riverside, CA – 59-year-old Daniel Romo Jr. of Moreno Valley died after his car collided head-on with two other vehicles while traveling the wrong way on the Riverside (91) Freeway in Riverside.
According to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office, the accident was reported around 9:30 a.m. on September 6, 2026, on the eastbound side of the freeway near University Avenue.
The California Highway Patrol reported that Romo Jr. was driving a brown Ford Flex SUV westbound in the eastbound lanes of the freeway when he collided head-on with a Honda Civic, redirecting it to the center divider. The Honda then continued into the No. 2 lane and collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla.
Romo Jr. was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The drivers of the Honda and the Toyota were also hospitalized with minor to major injuries.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Riverside, CA – One person died, and another was injured in a multi-vehicle collision involving a wrong-way driver that happened Sunday morning in Riverside, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident occurred around 9:31 a.m. on September 6, 2026, on the eastbound Riverside (91) Freeway near University Avenue.
The crash involved three vehicles, including one that was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes.
Firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene and found one person trapped inside their vehicle and another person on the ground with major injuries. The firefighters immediately began performing CPR on one of the victims.
One person died at the scene, as per the report.
Authorities closed the Nos. 1, 2, and 3 lanes of the freeway, as well as the 14th Street on-ramp to the eastbound 91 Freeway. Motorists were being diverted off the freeway at University Avenue and 14th Street.
