Tacoma, WA – A cyclist was hospitalized after colliding with a car Thursday night while heading in the wrong direction on Interstate 5 in Tacoma, authorities reported.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the accident was reported on the northbound I-5 and Pacific Avenue, near milepost 133.

Investigators established that the bicyclist was traveling south in the northbound lanes of the freeway when they collided with a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee heading north.

The car was occupied by the driver, a 43-year-old Seattle man, and a passenger, identified as a 39-year-old woman from Seattle.

The cyclist was transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries. The rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Authorities did not mention the specific lane that the rider was using.

Authorities are investigating to determine the factors that contributed to the collision.
