Shelton, WA – An Olympia man was hospitalized after a traffic accident that occurred as he attemped to avoid a deer near Shelton on Thursday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.

A single vehicle was involved in the accident that took place on State at about 5:30 a.m. on November 27, 2025.

Authorities reported that a 27-year-old man was on his way to work traveling on SR 101 when he drifted off the roadway to avoid a deer. The car crashed into trees and sustained major damage.

The driver was pinned inside the car and it took emergency crews nearly 45 minutes to extricate him from the car. He was taken to Tumwater airport, then was airlifted to Tacoma General Hospital with major injuries. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The WSP reported that the driver was wearing his seatbelt and impairment was not suspected to have played a role in the incident. The car was towed from the scene and the highway was temporarily shut down as authorities worked at the scene. The WSP is handling the investigation.
