Santa Clarita, CA – Authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash after a person was found dead along Needham Ranch Road near Sierra Highway on Wednesday morning, according to the County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators are treating the case as a hit-and-run. Officials said they do not yet know what led to the collision, and no description of the suspect or vehicle has been made available.

In 2022, Santa Clarita recorded 768 total victims killed and injured in traffic collisions, giving the city a favorable ranking (44th out of 61 cities of similar size) compared to other California jurisdictions. The city's collision injury rate has generally been lower than state, national, and county averages.  Overall traffic collision injuries in Santa Clarita have shown a declining trend since 2019, despite traffic volumes beginning to return to pre-pandemic levels in 2022 and 2023. Specific collision types in 2022 included 56 alcohol-involved incidents, 28 motorcycle-involved incidents, 23 -involved incidents, and 27 bicyclist-involved incidents.  A “collision versus citation” evaluation by the city, analyzing data across ten corridors, concluded that increased traffic enforcement is associated with a decrease in crashes, highlighting speed and distracted driving as primary factors in many incidents.
