The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) consistently identifies San Francisco as a high-risk jurisdiction for motorcyclists. According to 2023 OTS data, San Francisco ranks 1st out of 15 peer cities for motorcycle-related fatalities and injuries when adjusted for vehicle miles traveled. Â While non-fatal motorcycle injuries in the city decreased by 33% post-pandemic, fatalities surged by 115%. Motorcyclists represent only 2% of road users but approximately 25% of traffic deaths. OTS reports cite unsafe speed (28.7%), improper turning, and right-of-way violations as the leading primary crash factors. Consequently, state-funded local initiatives focus heavily on rider training and increasing “conspicuity” to mitigate these disproportionate risks.
