Pedestrian Hurt in Phoenix Crash near Glendale and 27th Avenues

Phoenix, AZ – A pedestrian was hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle near an intersection in west Phoenix early Thursday morning, according to the authorities.

At about 6 a.m. February 19, authorities responded to the scene of a collision in the area of Glendale and 27th Avenues.

A preliminary investigation shows that a person was hit by a car near the intersection. Details on what led up to the collision were not immediately available.

Police and emergency personnel immediately responded to the scene and located the injured pedestrian and the involved vehicle.

The pedestrian was evaluated and transported to a hospital for further treatment. An update on the pedestrian’s injuries was not available in the report.

The driver reportedly cooperated with the investigators. There were no arrests in the incident and police have not confirmed whether impairment played any role in the incident.

Both sides of 27th Avenue were blocked in the area as authorities investigated the incident. It was not clear how long the closure would last.

Police are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the collision.

Phoenix continues to experience a high volume of vehicle collisions, consistently accounting for a disproportionate share of Arizona’s total crashes and fatalities, though recent preliminary data shows a slight decline in fatal crashes in 2024. The city logged 37,472 crashes in 2024, which translates to an average of over 102 accidents per day. In 2022, Phoenix recorded 38,311 total crashes, resulting in 282 fatalities and over 10,000 personal injuries. The city is ranked as one of the deadliest major cities in the US for traffic fatalities per capita.  Key contributing factors in Phoenix crashes include speeding, which is a factor in approximately 34% of deadly crashes, and distracted driving. Alcohol-related incidents also remain a concern, particularly on weekend nights. Pedestrians and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable; pedestrian collisions resulted in 249 deaths in Arizona in 2024, while motorcycle fatalities account for 20% of all fatal crashes in Phoenix.
