In San Luis Obispo (SLO), pedestrian safety is a critical concern, as 75% of all fatal and severe injury collisions involve a victim traveling on foot or by bicycle. The City has identified a “High-Injury Network,” where 75% of these severe collisions occur on just 10% of the city’s roadways, primarily multi-lane arterial streets with posted speeds of 40 mph or higher. Recent data highlights a concerning trend. In the three years leading up to March 2022, the city experienced eight traffic fatalities, which was approximately double the rate of the previous ten-year average.
