Tracy, CA – A passenger died, and a driver was arrested after a DUI collision that happened Friday morning near Tracy, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The rollover crash was reported around 9:30 a.m., January 2, on westbound State Route 4, west of the Middle River Bridge.
Witnesses informed authorities that the driver of a westbound Nissan was traveling recklessly, almost going head-on with eastbound traffic several times.
The driver eventually lost control of the car, went off the south roadway edge, and overturned. The vehicle came to rest on its roof in the water.
Several people freed the driver and a passenger from the car.
The passenger was transported to San Joaquin County General Hospital, where they died.
Authorities arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI and booked them into the county jail.
Tracy has recorded an improvement in the number of people killed or injured in traffic collisions from 241 in 2022 to 223 in 2023, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). This decrease in victim numbers gave the city a rank of 89 out of 103 comparable cities, an improvement from the previous year’s position of 71.
