Oxnard, CA – A bicyclist died after being involved in a collision with a vehicle on Wooley Road in Oxnard on Wednesday evening, according to the Oxnard Police Department.

At about 6:30 p.m. January 21, authorities received reports of a crash at the intersection of Industrial Avenue.

According to investigators, a 79-year-old Oxnard woman was driving a 2008 Toyota Highlander eastbound on Wooley Road when she collided with a bicyclist traveling ahead of her. The impact ejected the bicyclist onto the ground.

Oxnard police as well as firefighters and medical crews arrived shortly after and rendered aid to the bicyclist, who was found in the street with major injuries.

The rider was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. He was only identified as a 23-year-old Oxnard man. His name was withheld pending notification of the next-of-kin.

The driver of the Toyota stayed at the site of the collision after the accident and was cooperative with the investigators. It’s unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.

Oxnard is one of the largest cities in Ventura County both by size and population. With the ever expanding population, the city has also seen a spike in the number of traffic collisions in the recent past. Other major causes included distracted-driving, unsafe passing and speeding. Highway 101 and Pacific Coast Highway are notably some of the highways regarded as dangerous in Oxnard due to the frequency of accidents occurring yearly. These accidents are mostly due to high volume of traffic, including large trucks. However, driver discipline can play a major role in improving road safety on major roadways in Oxnard.
