Madera County, CA. – A Chowchilla police officer was killed in a car crash on Friday night in Chowchilla.

According to the Madera-area California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 152 and Road 13.

Officer Ray Barrantes was traveling eastbound on Highway 152 in a marked Ford Explorer when he collided with a truck pulling a set of doubles filled with tomatoes that was traveling south on Road 13.

The officer’s patrol vehicle became lodged underneath the Freightliner’s rear trailer.

Barrantes died at the scene.

The 36-year-old Firebaugh man driving the Freightliner was uninjured.

More details about the accident were not released.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
