According to the Oakland Police Department, at around 11 a.m. on June 8, 2026, an officer with the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department spotted a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV driving recklessly on East 12th Street and attempted a traffic stop.

Oakland, CA – Two men are dead, and a police officer was injured after car theft suspects crashed into a patrol vehicle Monday morning in East Oakland.
According to the Oakland Police Department, at around 11 a.m. on June 8, 2026, an officer with the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department spotted a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV driving recklessly on East 12th Street and attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not pull over, but sped away. The officers did not pursue the vehicle.
Authorities said moments later, the SUV, which is suspected to have been stolen, crashed into a marked OPD patrol vehicle near East 12th Street and 29th Avenue. The patrol car had not been involved in the first call.
The Tahoe overturned onto its side, ejecting two men. One of them landed in the center median beneath the elevated BART tracks, and the other came to rest on the pavement in front of the SUV.
Emergency personnel pronounced the two men dead at the scene.
The driver of the Tahoe ran from the scene but was shortly after arrested by an OHAPD officer.
The officer inside the police car was hospitalized and is expected to be OK.
OPD is investigating the accident.
