Oceanside generally sees between 700 and 800 traffic crashes annually, with speeding being the leading cause. Data from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and UC Berkeley’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) for 2021 indicated a rise in fatal accidents, though the overall number of collisions had seen a decline in previous years. According to 2021 data, Oceanside reported 706 total car accidents, resulting in 982 people injured or killed. The city ranked highly in several specific collision categories among similarly sized cities in the state. For instance, in 2021, Oceanside ranked 1st out of 60 cities for motorcycle-involved victims killed and injured, 5th for bicyclist victims, and 6th for alcohol-involved victims. In 2020, Oceanside ranked 30th among 61 cities for hit-and-run collisions. The primary collision factor in roughly one-third of all accidents is excessive speed. Other common contributing factors include improper turning, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and failing to yield the right of way.
