Mojave, CA – The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified the elderly couple killed in a car accident that happened in Mojave on Monday evening.
Roland James Squires, 85, and Carolyn Darnell Squires, 83, both of California City, were killed in the wreck that took place at around 5:08 p.m. April 13, on the Highway 58 off-ramp from Highway 14.
Preliminary investigations by the California Highway Patrol revealed that a Toyota Corolla and a white Mazda were involved in a T-bone collision on the off-ramp. It’s unclear what caused the two vehicles to crash.
CHP and the Kern County Fire Department personnel arrived within minutes and assisted the involved parties.
Authorities reported that Roland was driving one of the vehicles and Carolyn was his passenger. Both of them were declared deceased at the scene.
There was no update on the condition of the the other involved motorist, who is yet to be identified by the authorities.
According to Caltrans, the inside lane of Highway 14 from Highway 58 was temporarily shut down as authorities worked to clear the scene.
It’s unclear whether impairment or speed played any role in the incident. The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the deadly Mojave accident.
